Mud
An adventurous family, who goes through obstacles for the sake of the view.
The summer before last, my family and I had started an unexpected adventure. We started out in Silverton, camping at this non-unique campsite. Unfortunately, there was no view, it was just surrounded by trees. You couldn’t see the mountains or even see the lake that was ten minutes away. There was this dirt road that circled around the campsite, you’d walk up to the lake, and from there we basically biked around.
We decided to head into Silverton, where we would go get dinner. They said the pizza wouldn't be reading for forty minutes, so we wanted to adventure a little bit. We went twenty minutes up this dirt road, which we knew lead up to the Alpine Loop, so we purposely took a wrong turn.
Once we make this turn, there was this up-hill dirt road that led to this gorgeous lake up on top. It was mostly frozen over, with the reflection of the mountains still showing, and then there was a giant mound of snow.
We actually climbed the mound of snow and I was terrified my dog was going to fall in the water. We immediately decided that we need to change our campsite. We all headed back down very quickly, because it seemed as if we were terrified that someone's going to come take our spot.
We had two cars, so one went back to Silverton to get the food, and the other went to the original campsite. My dad and I were the ones rushing to pack up all of our stuff. We finally meet everyone back up, and we eventually got to the base of the road again. Here, when you turn around, there's this gap in the mountain and the sky is yellow.
We started going up and it's just downpouring, and this is a dirt road so it starts to get all muddy. We were just hoping we could get to the top, up next to that late because it's kind of like this parking lot area where we we’re going to camp. But no, we get stuck right in the middle, halfway up. Thankfully there is this little side part, which comes into play later on, which is covered in rocks instead of mud so that works well for us.
Our camper gets stuck and everyone is doing their own thing. My sister, she is not adventurous whatsoever, she did not want to set foot out of that car. She’s sitting in the passenger seat taking photos of all of us, which we would look back on later, just laughing. My brother’s running around frantically, with my mom trying to control him. He's more of a distraction than helpful, honestly. My dad’s getting in and out of the car he's so frustrated, and I'm basically doing my own thing.
Eventually, I had this idea, I’ll give myself credit here. Since we had two cars, we unhook the first one and reattach the second car. Since it didn’t have most of our stuff in it, it was going to be way lighter. So, to see if that made a difference, we had emptied out the camper as well. We eventually get it out like that, and by now it's been a good two and a half hours.
We immediately pull off to that rocky side. Unfortunately it was at this really bad slant. It was a kind of funny walking through the doorway. We all thought it was hilarious; we're all trying go bed and we turn the water on and sinks at this bad angle with the water running all funny. That night it was so hard to sleep. everyone seemed a little nauseous and it felt like you were sleeping standing straight up.
That's the gist of it. The next morning we went on this beautiful hike, fixed the camper of course, went up to the lake, and later rode along the Alpine Loop.
During this adventure, this unexpected adventure, it felt cool for me. I felt like I took the leader role here. I haven't really done that before in my family during our adventures. I know I wasn’t able to before, but now I know I can handle my own mud.
